DID YOU KNOW

Every time you participate in sustainable second-hand clothing, you’re prolonging the time until a piece of clothing becomes waste. Most quality garments that are bought second-hand still have another decade or two of life left in them. This, in turn, might mean that one less pair of jeans is made which means more drinking water for people who need it.

Rhythms and Chaos: The Art of Anca Browne

Join us for the first Art After Dark of the year with artist Anca Browne. Anca is a felt artist creating work rich in patterns, rules and rhythms.

Coming from a mathematics and programming background, I find works based on patterns, rules, or rhythms beautiful. I like to make pieces that have an overall organization but also have some chaos.  The underlying structure gives the work a solid attractive basis while the disruptive elements bring the piece to life.  I also often try to create pieces that look different as you change perspective.

My process starts with a sketch which is either designed directly in a drawing program or is the output of an algorithm that I coded specifically for the piece.  My works are usually constructed out of many smaller pieces that I laser cut and then "pin" on a supporting back piece. Because of this many-layered construction, my works have a 3D quality. I like using felt because of its warm tactile presence but also because the thicker, denser and stiffer felt that I am using is well suited to "building" my pieces.

Tuvan Shamanism and Throatsinging with Chingiz Kam and Arrington de Dionyso

The Bunker & The Frequent Weaver are proud to present an evening of Tuvan Shamanism and Throatsinging with Chingiz Kam and Arrington de Dionyso. Chingiz Kam is an initiated hereditary shaman from Tuva now living in New York City. He will conduct an authentic ritual for powerful healing adapted for the space while sharing his personal "Algysh" an ancient genre of spirit-song used by Tuvan shamans in every sacred setting.

Arrington de Dionyso will present “Voice Mask” a musical performance ritual utilizing improvisatory structures to showcase an entrancing virtuosity with a variety of extended vocal techniques such as traditional Tuvan throatsinging combined with simple elements such as aluminum foil and PVC pipes to enchance the “soul” of vocal sound.

As a “punk ethnomusicologist gone rogue”, Arrington has traveled the world in search of primordially potent sounds. He’s worked extensively within the Jathilan trance music traditions of East Java, the Master Musicians of Jajouka (Morocco), and is a devoted student of Siberian shamanism.

MORE ABOUT CHINGIZ KAM

In Chingiz’s own words- “I was born on the banks of the mighty Siberian river Yenisei and raised in the city of Kyzyl, Republic of Tuva (Russia, Siberia). I have the title of Brown Bear Shaman. In my family, both on my father's side and on my mother's side, there were ancestors of shamans. Ancestors come from Tes-Khemsky and Ovyursky districts, the Republic of Tuva, which is located on the border with Mongolia.

Childhood and youth were mostly spent at the shepherd's camp of my grandparents. They have kept their culture of nomadic life up to the present. Every vacation I came to them and helped them with the housework. During this time, my special connection and love for nature and animals was formed. Just like all Tuvans always, I pastured sheep and goats, sang songs in the steppes and in the mountains. I recognized life around me through the prism of Tuvan traditions. During this period, I met many spirits of the mountains, taiga, and rivers of my native places. They sometimes appeared in the form of deer, bear, wolf, snowy owl, eagle and other animals, and sometimes as strong strange short winds.

All my life I clearly felt that someone was watching me closely. They were invisible defenders. When I was very ill, my ancestors came in dreams in the guise of various familiar people and fumigated with the help of artysh (juniper), after which I quickly began to recover. I have never been able to get lost in a dense forest or in an unfamiliar area. I felt many strange inexplicable things very accurately and my correct decisions were formed from this. Some people felt that I was a shaman and asked me to make charms and amulets.

Ancestral shamans also gave life lessons and the necessary knowledge for shamanic practice to one degree or another. They began to actively “work” at the time when I was about 27 years old. At that time, I had already graduated from the university and worked in my specialty. Any technique stopped working next to me, because of this there were problems at work. Reality seemed to become unreal and I experienced health problems, but the results of all tests showed that I was healthy. This went on for a couple of years, until the ancestors of the shamans “in their own ways” found me a mentor - a practicing Tuvan shaman, who is also a member of the “Adyg Eeren” society. I was initiated by three strongest shamans of the “Adyg Eeren” society, one of whom was the Supreme Shaman of Tuva. So I started my practice in a shamanic clinic in Kyzyl.”

Chingiz will be the first shaman of his lineage to travel to the West Coast of the United States.

This talk explores his tintinnabuli technique and explains the phenomenon of this transcendent music.

Enjoy an evening of fun with music and the performing arts community of the Central Coast! You're invited to attend the San Luis Obispo Master Chorale's event featuring Dr. Andrew Shenton, Professor of Music at Boston University, as part of the Beyond the Notes series. Dr. Shenton will present "The Phenomenal Pärt" accompanied by hors d'oeuvres and wine. Kindly pre-register for this event so your attendance is expected. Plus, share in the camaraderie with Music Director Dr. Thomas Davies, the talented soloists and singers of the Chorale, and meet the speaker!

About the presentation:

About the presenter:

About the concert:

San Luis Obispo Master Chorale presents “Chants Encounter”

San Luis Obispo Master Chorale's 2023/2024 season begins on November 19 at 3:00 pm with “Chants Encounter.” This performance features Estonian-born composer Arvo Pärt’s Te Deum and W. A. Mozart's Mass in C minor. Pärt utilizes the beauty of chant mixed with bell-like chords (tintinnabulation) to create a dramatic rendering of the fourth century prayer.

Mozart’s Mass, a wedding gift for his wife Constanza, is influenced by the choral works of Bach and Handel, as well as eighteenth century opera. This work has all the best of Mozart: beautiful melodies, brilliantly written counterpoint, large choral sound with intimate chamber music. “Chants Encounter” will also include Mozart’s concert aria, Per questa bella mano, for baritone and double-bass.

Concert soloists include sopranos Alba Franco-Cancél and Amy Goymerac, tenor Jon Lee Keenan, baritone Joel Balzun, and Ken Hustad, double-bass.
