BUNKER HISTORY
The Bunker SLO has been a passion project of mine since I first walked into the building…
The building that houses The Bunker SLO has a kind of magic…I can’t describe it but when you feel the vibe you know. The building was built by Mr. Dixon in the 1940’s as an agricultural plumbing supply company. Over the years it has been Luna Rustica’s warehouse, Whiz Bang’s office and countless other things. When I had the opportunity to take over the lease I couldn’t say yes faster. The yet unnamed building became my favorite place to be…it was escape….from my job, from my family, from everything, so I could get back to making art. I found that there were lots of folks like me that needed a place to create, make noise, feel free and with that need came V1 of The Bunker SLO. The first “Bunkmates” were Irene Flores (illustrator, artist, entrepreneur) and Jeff “Barn-Boy” Sauer (premiere creator of all things old wood). Slowly more artists came looking for space and The Bunker’s doors were open to them all. From jewelers to cake designers, graphic designers to collagers, the Bunker served as a safe place for creators.
Now it is time for V2. The Bunker is now cleaned up, has kick ass coffee (Thanks Nautical Bean), shows and events. As we expand we plan to hold more events (for grown ups and kiddos), show more art (from locals and out of the area artists) and provide a space for non-profits and individuals to hold events.
