“Bloom" is a unique, interactive art piece made from recycled materials. Participants are encouraged to pull the chords and watch as the center bloom shifts. The repurposing plastic grocery bags, encourages conversation about the environmental impact of our daily habits and voting power. As Californias, we passed well-meaning legislation discouraging "single use" plastic bags, which back fired. Since the ban, our plastic bag waste has increased by 47% as grocery retailers offer thicker, more wasteful "multi use" bags for a 10 cent charge. I want my art to spark conversation about how it is not enough to pass legislation and try to force others to change. We must work to inspire and empower each other to make change. We must strive to be thoughtful and creative in our solutions for environmental change.
While the bright reds and bold blocks of color in "Bloom" convey a sense of urgency and tactile reminders of the stark and shocking realities we have created.
