The beautiful hills and valleys of SLO County are typically portrayed by artists and photographers as covered by lush green grass. I've taken many photos of the fields and put them in a special category I call "Greenscapes." Although bursting with a vibrant green in January, the grass soon wilts after a few months. By May of each year the hills are starting to turn brown. By the end of summer, the grass is a withered pale yellow. In spots, the gray-brown earth shows through.
I've noticed that the green cycle is getting shorter and the pale yellow cycle is getting longer. Less rain? Undoubtedly. Warmer temperatures? Absolutely. So I started to document the dry cycle, capturing images of desiccated hills and rangeland, plus other shots indicating a drying land. This work give us a snapshot of what the land will look like year around if changes in our lifestyles aren't made.
