This image is from my series Oceano - for seven generations which examines the politics of land use, public health and environmental protection, media history, and the legacy of colonization. The project is located in the Oceano Dunes — famous for Edward Weston's iconic Modernist photographs but also home to a buried 1923 Hollywood movie set, Depression-era utopian settlers, present-day ATV riders, and fundamentally, the Indigenous yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini Northern Chumash tribe.

The contemporary controversy surrounding the dunes is a public health crisis - dust generated by ATV riding is making nearby communities sick - and environmental destruction - there are more endangered and threatened species in the dunes than anywhere else in the state of California. Through photographs, video, and text, this series (two featured in this show) engages with these complex histories and the environmental and cultural tensions at play in this region.
